Kelly Is a Boy's Name Too

My wife and I just saw a commercial with a little boy opening Christmas presents and they are all girl presents. At the end the boy writes a letter, "Dear Santa, Kelly is a boy's name too."

Even though my name is Brook and not Kelly, I can feel his pain.

Sorry that the video plays automatically. I haven't figured out how to tweak JC Penney's code to get it to not.

  • I apologize for the quality and that it is a WMV file and that it is a shortened version of the commercial. I am trying to find the full version.

But for now here's what I have:

  • Go to JCPenney's site, click the "gift card" tab and enjoy the TV ad with poor Kelly.

  • Wow, does this resonate with me. I have to include my middle name in emails or people assume I'm a woman. This is funny stuff.

  • when writing to people i don't know i usually add in the MR. part however I still get responses back for mrs ...and if there is something still wrong i will call them and then call them out on the error in gender then get my problem fixed.

  • My name is Brooke Kelley and although I dont get mistaken for being a boy or for having a boys name.. I do get the frustration of having two names that could both be last names or both be first names... Ahhh... FRUSTRATING.. You know, like when you want to order pizza or pick up photos and they say last name?, and I say, "Kelley" and they reply, NO, LAST name.. ugh... the struggles!

  • Dude are you serious,

    ur name is brook kelly,

My name is Kelly brooks and I'm a guy. I didn't have any problem with my name until I got a job that forced me to wear a name tag causing much pain. People are so retarded.

  • As a mom who chose this name for my son, I don't regret it one bit. I think it's a great name for a guy and I know most girls would agree with me.

  • Well anonymous mom, you weren't the one being ridiculed or having every single person you are introduced to say 'i thought Kelly was a girl's name', wow i just never seem to tire of that one.

  • Many apologies to the Brook that posted a comment here. I accidentally clicked reject on the comment. I get some much spam on my blogs that I guess it is just a habit. I can't find a way to undo the rejection, so below is the text of him comment.

His profile link is also below. Unfortunately, it looked like his profile is locked down. I wouldn't mind making contact with other guys named Brook.

"My name is Brook, and though I have the same conversation every day about it being primarily a girl's name, I like it. "

  • I named my son Kelly (origionally a boys name) and am more miffed that the female population has somehow taken over the name so completely that I have to constantly correct people. I also have a son named Quintin and who would have thought it but now Girls are using that too.

  • I'm another male Kelly! I do get some confusion now and then (in fact I have an e-mail folder where I keep mis-titled e-mails that I get) but overall I like my name and I've not had the teasing (other than one classmate who teased anyone for whatever reason) that so many people claim happens to boys who have unisex names. I think that Kelly is a great name for a boy, and kuddos to any parents that want to use it for their sons! (And Brook, I like your name too!)

  • First Anonymous: I agree with you about girls often liking my name! (I forgot to put this in my original comment.) Even among the male population, I have received more positive than negative comments (most of the ones that are "bad" are merely those who haven't heard of male Kellys before and don't know the name can work both ways).

  • I like that my name helps me screen calls and mail. If a letter is addressed to Mrs. Kelly ***** or Ms. Kelly ***** *plunk* right in the trash. If somebody calls and asks for Ms. Kelly ***** I just hang up. Although it's a bugger when I show up for a job interview and they CLEARLY thought my online resume was from a female. So we politely go thru the entire process knowing full well I will not be hired.

  • Hey Brook, I just saw your reply to my comment (that was deleted by accident.) Here's one that you might relate to: Upon receiving a phone call from someone, they start: "Hi, is Brook there?" and I say "yes" and they say, "Can I speak to her?"
